My arrival to the Department of Psychology was a difficult and tumultuous time in my life. During that time I enjoyed the steadfast support of Dr. Miller, for which I will be eternally grateful. He was brilliant psychologist, and I remember with fondness that he could always be counted on to push back on departmental administrative decisions that he felt were faddish or misguided. However, Howard's gruff and sardonic style was never quite able to mask his deep kindness, and empathy, and love of humankind. He was regarded by many as the most intelligent person in our department and our most effective psychotherapist as well. I wish for strength and peace for his family and friends.

The Department of Psychology at The University of Alabama extends heartfelt sorrow and sympathy to the family of Dr. Howard Miller. In the words of Dr Stan Brodsky, "He was a faculty member from 1967 until about 1998. He led civil rights marches in the 60s and 70s and was a great supporter of minority graduate students. He was an amazingly bright and knowledgeable scholar and my friend."
- Rebecca S. Allen
