Obituary for David C. Womack
David Womack died July 11 at Druid City Hospital of congestive heart failure but leaves an inspiring legacy through hundreds of members of Circle K (CK) whom he advised for decades at the University of Alabama (UA). He also was District Administrator for CK for years. His love of CK began at Hinds Community College, in Raymond, Mississippi and Mississippi State University. David's calling for the past 43 years was developing young people into leaders in community service. Under David's Leadership, The University of Alabama's Circle K and the Alabama district had students elected to the district and international offices. Trophies and plaques were won by his members, the Alabama District, and by David himself. Circle K chapter scrapbooks won awards. He was a Tuscaloosa Kiwanian for years, served a term as president and was on the board at the time of his death. His most prized Kiwanis award was the 1989 Circle of Service Award, created to recognize & honor an individual within Kiwanis International who has made the most outstanding contribution to all of Circle K International. David was reared near Utica, MS and graduated from Hinds CC and Mississippi State. Soon he began his career at UA as staff horticulturist, retiring 30 years later as Manager of Grounds. During his tenure at UA, he was awarded the first E. Roger Sayers Distinguished Service Award created to recognize an individual who performed in an exemplary manner to further the mission of the university. In retirement, David continued as UA CK advisor even as he enjoyed four summers as a driver/guide for Princess Tours in Alaska. David is survived by a brother, Doug Womack, and Doug's wife Vicki; a sister, Martha Lightsey and her husband Jim; a niece and two nephews and twelve great-nieces and nephews, he also had a large extended family. David had a unique ability to maintain connections throughout his life with Circle K's, fellow Kiwanians, Alaska friends, Master Gardeners & co-workers. His Facebook page is filled with testimonials to his influence. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the David C. Womack Legacy of Service Endowed Scholarship at UA. Checks should be made payable to the Alumni Fund, ( with David C. Womack in the memo line), and mailed to UA NAA, Attn. Scholarship Dept., P.O. Box 861928, Tuscaloosa, Al 35486.
