It is with great sadness the family of Diane Sudha Ray announces her passing on Friday, September 4th, 2020, at the tender age of 78. Always young at heart, she passed away peacefully at the Glen Haven Nursing Home in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s and dementia, tended to by her devoted husband of 60 years, Dr. Paul Sukhamay Ray, and by her close family.

Sudha, born in India to the late Digendra and Sushama Karmakar, migrated to the United States 45 years ago, following her husband, first to the Bay Area in California, then to Saudi Arabia and then finally, thirty years ago, to Tuscaloosa Alabama. She was first and foremost a dedicated mother to two loving sons, Subrata (Steve) who passed away three years ago after a tough battle with cancer and her younger son Sumit, and a devoted wife to Paul (Sukhamay), Professor Emeritus of Engineering at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. She will be fondly remembered by her daughter-in-laws, Neelanjana and Sudeshna, grand-daughters- Roshni, Shikha and Diya, and close family and friends whose lives she touched both here in the United States and in India.

Diane (Sudha) had a warm and vivacious personality who loved to entertain - her Rasogollas and her cooking were famous within the Bengali community - before her health condition made it impossible. She was broad minded and made friends easily, connecting with and touching deeply people both younger and older, all who will miss her sorely. She also loved to travel and was blessed with the fortune to visit many of the sights and countries in four of the five continents of the world with her husband, and, in her earlier years, her kids, in tow.

Diane (Sudha) had an iron will and taught her sons a strong work ethic and a love of learning by example, teaching herself to communicate effectively in a foreign language (English) and acquired new administrative skills after coming to the United States, all the while taking care of her family. She applied her newly learned skills by working as an Administrative Assistant within the Benefits Department of the Regents of the University of California, at Berkeley. She also taught herself bridge late in life and then went on to play competitively becoming a champion bridge player in Tuscaloosa.

A private prayer services was held for Diane Sudha Ray at the Northport Funeral home, in Tuscaloosa Alabama on Saturday, September 5th. A private Shraddha Puja will be held in her memory at her home in Tuscaloosa on Saturday, September 12th.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Glen Haven Nursing Home for their compassionate care of Diane, even arranging for daily virtual visits with her family when Covid-19 prevented in-person daily visits.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in her honor.
