Bill Wharton was born in Mobile, Alabama, on July 2, 1948, to W.L. Wharton, Jr. and Ruby Wentz Wharton. He died November 6, 2025, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. His parents predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of 48 years Amelia Mitchell Wharton, son William Mitchell Wharton, brother Dr. Marcus Wharton (Susan), sister Jane Wharton Hall (Rob), plus several nieces and nephews.
Bill grew up in Mobile where he graduated from Davidson High School. He then began his higher education at Southwestern (now Rhodes College) in Memphis before transferring to Louisiana State University (B.A. 1970).
Bill began his professional career in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where he also met his future bride. He then spent his entire working life in his chosen field of human resources before finally retiring from the University of Alabama in 2013.
A devout Christian, Bill devoted himself to his church, his family, his community and his country. He was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Florence where he served in various capacities including Sunday School teacher and member of the presbytery. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Florence, Alabama Rotary Club.
The family requests memorials be sent to First Presbyterian Church of Florence or to a charity of choice.
